First Detection of Hco Emission at High Redshift

چکیده
We report the detection of HCO(J=1→0) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) through observations with the Very Large Array. This is the first detection of ionized molecular gas emission at high redshift (z > 2). HCO emission is a star formation indicator similar to HCN, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) ≃ 10 5 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds. We derive a lensing–corrected HCO line luminosity of L′HCO+ = 3.5× 10 K kmspc. Combining our new results with CO and HCN measurements from the literature, we find a HCO/CO luminosity ratio of 0.08 and a HCO/HCN luminosity ratio of 0.8. These ratios fall within the scatter of the same relationships found for low–z star–forming galaxies. However, a HCO/HCN luminosity ratio close to unity would not be expected for the Cloverleaf if the recently suggested relation between this ratio and the far–infrared luminosity were to hold. We conclude that a ratio between HCO and HCN luminosity close to 1 is likely due to the fact that the emission from both lines is optically thick and thermalized and emerges from dense regions of similar volumes. The CO, HCN and HCO luminosities suggest that the Cloverleaf is a composite AGN–starburst system, in agreement with the previous finding that about 20% of the total infrared luminosity in this system results from dust heated by star formation rather than heating by the AGN. We conclude that HCO is potentially a good tracer for dense molecular gas at high redshift. Detection of Emission from the Cn Radical in the Cloverleaf Quasar at Z=2.56
We report the detection of CN(N=3→2) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) based on observations with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. This is the first clear detection of emission from this radical at high redshift. CN emission is a tracer of dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) > 10 4 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds, in particular in regions where the clouds are af...
متن کاملDust and Molecules at High Redshift
In the last years, progress has been very rapid in the domain of molecules at high redshift, and we know in better detail now the molecular content in several systems beyond z = 1 and up to z ∼ 5, either through millimeter and sub-millimeter emission lines, continuum dust emission, or millimeter absorption lines in front of quasars. The first discovery in 1992 by Brown and van den Bout of CO li...
متن کاملEMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
متن کاملGalaxy Evolution and Star Formation Efficiency in the Last Half of the Universe
We present the results of a CO(1-0) emission survey with the IRAM 30m of 30 galaxies at moderate redshift (z ∼ 0.2-0.6) to explore galaxy evolution and in particular the star formation efficiency, in the redshift range filling the gap between local and very high-z objects. Our detection rate is about 50%. One of the bright objects was mapped at high resolution with the IRAM interferometer, and ...
متن کاملHigh - resolution observations at λ = 3 mm of the OH 231 . 8 + 4 . 2 molecular outflow
We present high spatial resolution observations of HCO+ (J=1–0), SO (J=22–11), H13CN (J=1–0), SiO (v = 1, J = 2–1), and the continuum at 3 mm from OH 231.8+4.2, taken with the IRAM interferometer at Plateau de Bure. We also report the first detection of NS in circumstellar envelopes. The overall distribution of the emission of all molecules (except for HCO+ and the SiO maser) is similar to that...
